Position Summary
Next Up seeks a full-time Digital and Social Media Manager to lead the communications department. They will develop and execute a robust communication strategy alongside leadership that supports programmatic and development efforts at Next Up and Next Up Action Fund. This position reports directly to and works closely with the Policy and Communications Director.
The ideal candidate can balance big-picture strategic vision with individual marketing and communication channels that speak to young Black and brown, working-class Oregonians (aka you love being online and sharing information in a fun way)! You’ll excel in this role if you have a knack for visual design, a passion for being online, and a commitment to advancing racial, gender, and economic justice through storytelling.

Job Title: Digital and Social Media Manager
Position Type: Full-time (32 hours per week), permanent position with occasional evening work required.
Deadline Extended: Wednesday, September 25, 2024
Anticipated Start Date: October 2024
Salary and Benefits: $65,719.42. Our benefits include medical, vision, and dental coverage (with 100% of the premium covered by the employer), a 32-hour work week, a laptop computer, professional development funding, cell phone and work-from-home stipends, 20 days of PTO per year (10 days if hired after July 1), employer retirement contributions (401k retirement matching) after 1 year, and paid holidays including a two-week office closure in December.
Location: Our office is in Portland, Oregon. Our hybrid work policy requires full-time staff to work at least two days per week in-person. Biannual team retreats and a few major events are required in person as well.
COVID-19: We require all team members to be vaccinated for COVID-19 unless a team member has requested and received a health/disability or religious accommodation. For in-person meetings - applicants must follow all in-person covid protocols outlined by the organization.
responsibilities
content creation and Management
Develop and implement communication strategies across all social media platforms, website, and email list to enhance outreach, engagement, and awareness of Next Up’s programs and campaigns.
Design, curate, and manage all published content (images, videos, written posts) ensuring high-quality and consistent messaging targeted towards young people.
Design and produce timely and engaging visual content for social media platforms, including graphics, copywriting, and short videos filmed on a phone that aim to educate and mobilize young people on local policies and news.
Manage the creation and distribution of Next Up’s newsletters, including drafting content, designing layouts in Every Action, scheduling, and reporting on analytics.
Maintain and execute a communications content calendar, ensuring regular and timely updates. Facilitate quarterly communications retreats with staff members to create the quarterly calendar.
Monitor, analyze, and report on social media metrics to measure the success of campaigns and inform future strategies.
Engage with social media audiences by responding to comments, messages, and other interactions promptly and professionally.
Regularly update Next Up’s website on Squarespace to ensure accurate opportunities, news, and updates.
Communications Support for Programs and Campaigns
Lead external communications efforts related to Next Up’s programs, issue advocacy campaigns at the local and state levels, fundraising campaigns, and events.
Support grassroots organizing and advocacy campaigns by drafting and editing speeches, press releases, testimonies, letters to the editor (LTEs), and other public statements and materials as needed.
Collaborate with coalition partners on joint communications efforts, ensuring cohesive messaging and campaign design. This can include attending coalition meetings and communications sub-committee meetings.
Prepare relevant staff, base members, and community members for interviews and public speaking engagements by providing talking points and media training.
Branding and Design
Lead branding efforts, ensuring materials align with Next Up’s mission, vision, values, and culture.
Design and edit reports as needed for programs, fundraising, and campaigns. This includes coordinating the content and design for our annual end-of-year report.
Maintain brand guidelines to ensure consistency across all platforms and materials.
General Organizational Support
Ability to hire and manage interns and coordinator-level positions as decided by your supervisor.
Participate in organizational decision-making and planning processes.
Attend board meetings and board committees as assigned.
Contribute to efforts like events, fundraising campaigns, voter outreach, and contact, and database management.
When necessary, represent Next Up at speaking engagements and events.
qualifications

visual design
2+ years experience in graphic design with an ability to create engaging and accessible content in Canva or Adobe Suite.
COPYWRITING
Demonstrated ability to conceptualize, write, and edit compelling content that uses a race-class narrative. You can easily navigate between writing bite-sized copy for social posts and long-form content like press releases.
Keenly aware of the power of language and representation: Uses references and examples that speak to the experiences of a diverse audience, particularly young Black, Indigenous, and youth of color in Oregon.
digital communications strategy
2+ years experience in communications with an ability to demonstrate mid-level expertise in communications, design, and content strategy.
You’re online and very passionate about reaching young people through social media.
Ability to create and edit video content made on a cell phone for social media platforms, including Instagram Reels, TikToks, and YouTube.
You have a feedback mindset and are willing to ask for support and feedback on design and written content, with an ability to continue to implement and grow.

Highly organized, motivated, and detail-oriented

Issue and Political Expertise
Knowledge and familiarity with policy and political advocacy in Oregon. Familiarity or an ability to develop expertise in voting rights, and other policy areas that advance racial, gender, and economic justice and effectively communicate to diverse audiences.
Preferred but not required
Experience in managing social media channels and experience with social media analytics tools to enhance engagement and growth.
Experience with paid and earned media campaigns and pitching journalists.
Experience managing a Squarespace website.
