Job Title: Development Director

Salary: $79,115.00/year to start with yearly raises.

Duration: Full time (32/hour work week), permanent position with occasional evening work required.

Location: Our office is in central SE Portland, Oregon. We have a hybrid work policy that requires full-time staff to work 1-2 days per week in person. Biannual team retreats and a few major events are required in person as well.

Next Up and Next Up Action Fund is seeking a committed, resourceful, full-time (32 hours/week) Development Director. This position reports directly to and works closely with the Executive Director, helping to leverage new opportunities, cultivate critical partnerships, and maintain high standards in data, communications, and relationships. As a part of the team, the Development Director will work collaboratively to ensure the overall strength and health of the organization and the work.

You are a money organizer – you ensure that our staff, youth base, and extended community have the resources they need to do their work. Our ideal candidate takes initiative, is highly organized and detail-oriented, builds relationships easily, and has experience leading fundraising campaigns, planning events, and managing donor data.

Responsibilities

Fundraising and donor programs - 50%

  • Manage and steward the process to identify, qualify, and build relationships with prospective foundation and institutional funders, donors and corporate sponsors; manage the process and support the team to cultivate, solicit, and steward existing funders, donors and sponsors 

  • Manage alumni stewardship efforts, and launch new program tracking impact of Next Up Alumni in Oregon Politics 

  • Coordinate and support fundraising communications (e.g. call time, email, text banking) for the Executive Director 

  • Collaborate with the Executive Director to organize annual fundraising events. Coordinate party planning, set fundraising goals, manage sponsorships, and collaborate with Operations on logistics and Communications on marketing and promotion

  • Coordinate grassroots fundraising including direct mail solicitations, end of year giving, planning events, and developing a strong regular donor base

  • Manage and lead on monthly donor growth, retention and stewardship, including growing an Alumni giving program; develop targets and implement plans to grow the program

  • Create written donor materials and communications, including: cases for support, emails, mailings, and online content 

  • Manage development staff, interns, and fundraising volunteers as needed

  • Lead the procurement process for in-kind donations and produce in-kind donation receipts

  • When necessary, supervise contractors related to development functions 

Grant management - 25%

  • Write grants, develop and send completed proposals on time, and write grant reports 

  • Manage and facilitate staff participation and input on grant applications and reports

  • Track grant deadlines and provide guidance for Operations and Programs on grant requirements

Revenue and fundraising strategy  - 10%

  • Collaborate with the Executive Director and Development Team to create a revenue goal proposal for board approval annually

  • Develop a strategic revenue plan, backed by data analysis, to reach revenue goals; create fundraising budget for activities that steward and sustain the organization’s resources 

  • Collaborate with the Executive Director to develop a long-term resource strategy for the organization

  • Support the Executive Director and team to develop the annual budget, provide context and information for staff understanding and board approval on the revenue plan

  • Consistently integrate a deep understanding of key racial equity concepts into work projects and interactions by addressing structural implications and disproportionate impacts of policies, activities, and decisions on race, class, and other group identities within the context of job responsibilities and projects

Administration and Record Keeping - 10%

  • Ensure the organization’s financial health by tracking fundraising progress and goals, and providing regular updates to Executive Director and Boards

    • Work with the Executive team to ensure bi-annual budget reconciliation and assessment of revenue to accurately report on the financial health of the organization to inform financial decisions

    • Deposit checks, track revenue, and complete data entry 

  • Ensure thorough record-keeping, including timely data entry/processing, high data quality, and consistent data entry protocols within EveryAction 8 and other tools. This includes collaborating with department leads to collect any data needed for grant reporting.

  • Manage grant agreements, contracts, and other operations tasks related to grants and earned revenue. Includes sending invoices, documenting grant agreements and contracts, and other operations related to processing income

  • Maintaining a high standard of professional ethics while working with confidential and/or sensitive information

Key Qualifications

  • Commitment to Next Up's mission, with an appreciation for the role of civic engagement and grassroots community organizing in social change and movement building 

  • At least 2-3 years of fundraising experience at a manager level or above, including the following:

    • All aspects of development including grant writing, moves management, fundraising campaigns, event sponsorship

    • Evaluating fundraising strategies, developing revenue plans and projections

    • Proficiency in reading and interpreting financial reports and budgets

    • A social justice analysis of fundraising and experience implementing plans aligned with Community Centric Fundraising values and principles 

    • Experience with event planning and execution, especially events of more than 100 people

    • Experience planning and managing call time 

  • Leading on Racial Justice: You have a sophisticated understanding of how race dynamics impact supervisory relationships, organizational culture, partnerships, campaigns, and coalition work, and can demonstrate a history of deepening a racial justice approach within an organization, team, or campaign.

  • Excellent writing, editing, and research skills and an ability to create professional letters, spreadsheets, and presentations

  • Excellent communication skills and ability to engage many audiences: Racially, ethnically, and socioeconomically diverse communities; multilingual and multicultural preferred.

  • Strong time management and organizational skills including experience overseeing and managing multiple projects with competing deadlines, and planning, prioritizing, and coordinating your work

Preferred but not required

  • Working knowledge of EveryAction 8 

  • Experience with CallTime and CRM management

  • Familiarity and connections within our movement, political ecosystem, and the Portland philanthropic community

  • Competency with 501(c)3 and 501(c)4 nonprofit compliance with federal and state regulations
