Next Up Action Fund (501c4) is seeking two to four new Board Members! 📣

The Board of Directors for Next Up Action Fund (501c4) provides oversight and support to the work of the organization. We build community, collaborate with other young advocates, help with fundraising, deliver and shape the organization’s strategic vision, and more. We are fierce community advocates who are deeply committed to building strong youth-led movements in Oregon. We’re all under 35, and are a majority Black, Indigenous, and people of color.

Our c4 board works with Next Up Action Fund in reviewing and guiding our political and partisan work—helping to monitor our school board elections, ballot measures that we champion, and electoral candidate support.

Applications close: Sunday, November 16th, 2025 at 11:59 PM PST.

Location: Currently, board meetings are held remotely via Zoom. Our office is located in Portland, Oregon.

Time: We have our board meetings on the first Monday of each month from 6 - 8 pm.

Benefits: We provide a professional development training fund for our board, and food at all in-person meetings, and gift cards when working remotely for our monthly full board meeting.

Board Expectations

The board’s purpose is to guide the organization’s development, strategic direction, and mission. The board works to oversee and direct Next Up Action Fund’s affairs in accordance with its mission, operating procedures, and standards of fiscal responsibility. Responsibilities include:

  • Affirm the mission, core beliefs, and values of Next Up Action Fund.

  • Protect the organization’s assets and provide financial oversight.

  • Routinely monitor an annual budget.

  • Promote Next Up within local, state, and national communities.

  • Recruit and develop new board members; build a competent, diverse, and inclusive board.

  • Hire, develop, support, and evaluate the Executive Director.

  • Participate in grassroots fundraising efforts at various points throughout the year.

Weekly (1-2 hours, depending on the season)

  • Follow through on all tasks committed to at meetings.

  • Respond to communication from board members, staff, volunteers, and donors.

Monthly (2 hours)

  • Review agenda and board documents provided prior to board meetings.

  • Stay informed regarding activities and business operations of Next Up Action Fund.

  • Participate in any decision-making process that arises between board meetings.

Bi-annually/Annually

  • Attend scheduled planning sessions.

  • Attend major Next Up Action Fund events.

  • Participate in at least one field activity per election cycle (and bring a friend!)

Board Terms and Participation 

We ask for an initial commitment of two years, with terms starting when you are elected to the board. At the one-year mark, we check in to ask aboard to see how members feel about future commitments. We are open to one-year terms for students. We also expect that Board Members attend and engage in at least 9 of 12 board meetings, plus assigned events.
